Colombia will plant 180 million trees

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The tree planting target is 180 Million by 2022

At the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, the President of Colombia, Iván Duque, indicated that the goal is “the planting of trees for 180 million, has been proposed in his Government” and that “24.7 million million has already been planted and another 60 million will be planted this year”.

Duque stated that “the main challenge of our time is climate change,” and we will only be successful in the face of this challenge until we end deforestation around the world, with tree planting.”

“I think this is a very important initiative and I am very pleased that the World Economic Forum is leading this effort,”he said at the launch of the ‘Champions for One Trillión Trees’ platform,

But how will Colombia achieve this goal of sowing 180 Million trees?

According to some basic accounts it can be said that:

  • About 280,000 trees per day must be planted to meet this goal.
  • Planting each tree costs about 2,000 pesos and $600/labor.
  • About 600 trees are planted on one hectare

In conclusion, to meet the planting of trees in such a quantity, the government needs about 300,000 hectares and 470,000 million pesos (140 Million USD). Which, doesn’t seem to be so far-fetched.

But how do you get the money and people to sow them?

The answer may be specific:

Colombia has the Payment for Environmental Services (PSA) scheme which provides an economic incentive to people who provide environmental services such as conserving a watershed or forest. For these services, a family can receive up to a minimum wage per month to ensure their livelihood and sustainability.

In addition, it should be remembered that each reforested hectare represents a chemical CO2 uptake equivalent to 0.8 Tn per year. While an undeforested hectare represents 200 tn of CO2 not emitted into the atmosphere.
