What is sustainable development?

“Sustainable development is one that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the capacity of future generations.”

It is the development that seeks to balance in a sustainable way the different needs, becoming aware of the environmental, social and economic constraints that we face as a society.

It is at the relaxation of that old vision of economic development, which exclusively encourages the maximisation of the short-term result for companies.

So it’s just about taking care of the environment?

The approach to sustainable development is much broader than just the environment. It is also about ensuring a strong, healthy and just society. This means meeting the diverse needs of all people in existing and future communities, promoting personal well-being, social cohesion and inclusion, while creating equal opportunities.

A sustainable development approach can bring many short- and medium-term benefits, including:

Health and transportation: Instead of driving, switching to walking or biking for short trips will save you money, improve your health and is often just as fast and convenient.

Food: A reduction in wasted or wasted resources. For example, food and beverage. It means changing business paradigms.

Energy Conservation: reduce its use and clarify its source of generation, according to degree of impact on the inton.

It can come from urban planning!

Sustainable development provides an approach to making better decisions about the problems that affect all of our lives. By incorporating in the planning of new communities everyday topics, for example, easy access to health care and leisure facilities; as well as proximity to workplaces and pleasant public environments.

How do we make it happen?

We all have a role to play. Small actions, taken collectively, can add real change. However, to achieve sustainability we believe that governments must take the lead. OBC PARTNERS’ job is to help make this happen, and we do so through a combination of scrutiny, advice and organizational capacity building for sustainable development.

We support the Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs.

What kind of projects can a company develop?

The following describes some of the actions a company can take to be more sustainable.

Renewable energy

Install renewable energy generation!

Today we can develop renewable energy projects, which ensure that they are not more expensive than the energy that is acquired directly from the electricity grid.

  • Photovoltaic solar enegy
  • Solar thermal energy
  • Wind Energy
  • Production of biogas from waste
  • Hydraulic when conditions exist

Take care of the environment!

In general, almost any production process or the provision of a service has an impact on the environment. One of the main ones is energy consumption; even if we don’t know, all the energy produced by a country has a certain degree of energy produced from fossil fuels that emit CO2 into the atmosphere.

However, actions should be extended to reduce emissions of polluting gases to the atmosphere or to contamination of water sources with the sheds that are made.

Actions can be:

  • Switch to fuels such as natural gas
  • implement water treatments for reuse.
  • Developrefore reforestation programs to capture CO2
  • Energy efficiency programs
  • Transportation with electric vehicles

Process digitization!

Today technology allows to automate almost any activity made by man; going through repetitive activities, precision activities, the handling of large volumes of information and even decision-making.

With the sustainable development approach, this does not mean that people are not needed. It means we’ll make the job easier for people and we’ll be able to provide better services and even better price.

Some actions to develop:

  • Automate manual processes
  • Digitize the quality control process
  • Improving forecasts and reducing waste

Energy Efficiency.

It is the efficient use of energy, sometimes simply called energy saving, is the goal of reducing the amount of energy required to provide a unit of products and services.

It can be applied in:

  • Lighting
  • Direct heat or steam production in boilers
  • kinetic movement or transport
  • Compressed air
  • Cooling or air conditioning systems
