Plastic companies will have 30% reuse

Reusing an obligation – Resolution 1407 2018

In compliance with resolution 1407 of 2018, which establishes the extended responsibility of the producer for Packaging and Packaging. Today 150 companies from different sectors are working on a pilot. The strategic objective is to give the 30 products generated by the plastics and rubber industry a reuse of 30 products by 2030.

Among the companies that are working on this pilot plan, led by Acoplásticos and the Andi, is Alpina, Nutresa, Unilever, P&G, Dow, Ramo, Bimbo, Colsubsidio and Quala, among others.

“At the moment we are in the pilot phase of environmental sustainability and reuse, it is voluntary, but in a year it will be mandatory. All companies that place packaged products for final consumption on the market have to create or be part of a management plan and meet the reuse targets,” said Daniel Mitchell, president of Acoplásticos.

Solid waste reuse goal

According to the industry, the sector has more than 2,500 establishments, mainly small and medium-sized companies, but it is estimated that between 300,000 and 350,000 tons may be reused per year.

Despite these efforts to reduce the impact of plastic, Mitchell said that the biodegradable plastics sector in the country does not reach 1% of the industry, and that every year the average Colombian consumes 28 kilograms of plastic.
